DAY 3-5 — INTERIM SIM CARD

— REQUIRES: original passport for identity check (PostIdent or video-Ident)
— Prepaid SIMs (Aldi, Lidl Connect, Lebara): EUR 10-15 + monthly EUR 10-20 for 5-10 GB
— Postpaid contracts (Vertrag) typically require: German bank account + Schufa — defer 2-4 weeks
(j) Activate eSIM if device-compatible; store IMEI receipt for warranty
DAY 5-10 — ANMELDUNG TERMIN
(k) Attend Buergeramt Termin punctually (5 minutes early; 5 minutes late = lose slot in most Laender)
(l) Submit Anmeldeformular + supporting docs
(m) Declare Kirchensteuer status: choose religion declaration (rk = roemisch-katholisch; ev = evangelisch; jd = juedisch; iL = islamisch; or "keine" / "ohne") — 8-9% church tax if declared; NEUTRAL/none is the default for non-believers and non-affiliated Hindus, Sikhs, etc.
(n) Receive Meldebescheinigung (registration certificate) — 1 original (sometimes 2 free); keep original safe
(o) IMPORTANT: under §17 BMG, the 14-day clock runs from physical move-in date — beyond 14 days, Bussgeld up to EUR 1,000 applies. The Buergeramt does sometimes waive this for late Termin availability — bring printed proof of earliest-available Termin date booked promptly
DAY 7-14 — DOWNSTREAM ACTIVATIONS
(p) Steuer-Identifikationsnummer (Steuer-ID) — arrives BY POST automatically from Bundeszentralamt fuer Steuern (BZSt) within 2-4 weeks of Anmeldung — DO NOT request separately; check mailbox daily; share with employer when received
(q) Krankenversicherung enrolment (see prompt: de-settlement-krankenversicherung-mandatory)
(r) Open German bank account (see §3 below)
(s) Schufa-Auskunft request (free annual Datenkopie under Art. 15 GDPR; or paid 'Schufa-BonitaetsAuskunft' EUR 29.95 for landlord-acceptable format)
(t) Aufenthaltstitel — within 2 weeks of Anmeldung, book Termin at Auslaendebehoerde for eAT card (residence-permit smartcard) — D-visa is valid only 90-180 days; eAT card replaces it as the long-term Aufenthaltstitel under [PERMIT_BASIS]
(u) GEZ / Rundfunkbeitrag (TV-licence fee) — EUR 18.36/month per HOUSEHOLD (not per person); automatic letter arrives 1-2 months after Anmeldung; pay (one household = one fee even if 4 adults share)
