AFFIRMATION (non-religious — solemn affirmation, no religious content): "I, [full name], do solemnly, sincerely and truly declare and affirm that on becoming a British citizen, I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to His Majesty King Charles the Third, His Heirs and Successors, according to law." Notes: • Wording is fixed in the British Nationality (General) Regulations 2003 • "King Charles the Third" (since Sept 2022 — previously "Queen Elizabeth the Second") • Both versions are equally legally valid §5 — THE PLEDGE TO THE UK After the Oath / Affirmation, all new citizens recite the Pledge: "I will give my loyalty to the United Kingdom and respect its rights and freedoms. I will uphold its democratic values. I will observe its laws faithfully and fulfil my duties and obligations as a British citizen." Notes: • Wording is fixed • Recited as a group at group ceremonies, individually at private ceremonies • Must be audible to the conducting officer §6 — RECEIVE THE CERTIFICATE (a) Conducting officer reads applicant's name (b) Hands over the Naturalisation Certificate (original — keep safe; do NOT laminate) (c) Photo opportunity with mayor / official (subject to council policy) (d) Signing of council register (e) National anthem played at most ceremonies (standing optional but customary) §7 — REHEARSAL TIPS • Read the Oath/Affirmation and Pledge aloud 3-5 times before the ceremony • Practise saying "[full name]" clearly — caseworker hears it for the first time • If two surnames or hyphenated, confirm pronunciation with conducting officer beforehand • Group setting: speak with the group, not ahead of or behind • Phones on silent / off §8 — IF No indicates children on Form MN1 • Children under 18 registered (not naturalised) under s.3 BNA 1981 • Children do NOT recite the Oath / Pledge themselves • Children attend ceremony with parents — receive their own certificate • Bring children's passports + BRPs • Each child gets their own Naturalisation / Registration Certificate §9 — POST-CEREMONY NEXT STEPS (a) Apply for first British passport via HMPO (Her Majesty's Passport Office) — apply online; processing 3-6 weeks standard, £88.50 fee adult, £57.50 child (verify current) (b) Update HMRC, NHS, GP, employer with citizenship status (c) Register to vote with local council (vote in all UK elections including general elections) (d) BRP becomes invalid — destroy after British passport received (do NOT cut it before — banks/landlords may still verify ID via BRP) (e) If client holds Indian citizenship → flag automatic loss under Indian Citizenship Act 1955 s.9 + 3-month Indian passport surrender requirement (f) Apply for OCI via VFS Global UK (separate prompt: uk-citizenship-india-renunciation-oci) (g) Store original Naturalisation Certificate securely — certified copies for daily use only End with: "DRAFT preparation guide — coach client through Affirmation wording and Pledge naturally.
