Build a Duolingo English Test (DET) preparation and submission strategy for [CLIENT_NAME] targeting DET [TARGET_DET_SCORE] for admission to [TARGET_INSTITUTIONS]. Test date [TEST_DATE_TARGET], prep window [STUDY_DAYS_AVAILABLE] days.
CLIENT SUMMARY
- Target DET score: [TARGET_DET_SCORE] (out of 160)
- Target institutions: [TARGET_INSTITUTIONS]
- DET acceptance verified: Need to verify
- Test date: [TEST_DATE_TARGET]
- Prep window: [STUDY_DAYS_AVAILABLE] days
- English level: [PRIOR_ENGLISH_LEVEL]
- Home-test setup: Yes
§1 — WHY DET (AND WHY NOT)
ADVANTAGES vs TOEFL iBT / IELTS Academic:
(a) Cost — USD 65 vs USD 195 (TOEFL) or INR 17,000 (IELTS)
(b) Time — 1 hour test + 5 min setup vs 2 hours (TOEFL) / 2h45 (IELTS)
(c) Booking — same-day or next-day available vs 1-3 week wait
(d) Results — within 48 hours typically vs 4-8 days (TOEFL)
(e) Format — adaptive, computer-administered; no human interaction
(no Speaking task with proctor or live examiner)
(f) Free practice test on duolingo.com/test — unlimited
(g) Score-send free to all institutions (TOEFL charges per send)
DISADVANTAGES / RISKS:
(h) NOT accepted by US state nursing boards (CGFNS), most state medical
boards, professional licensure routes
(i) Some Top-10 universities still NOT accept DET (e.g. some Stanford
programmes; verify Stanford School of Engineering current policy)
(j) Home-test environment risk — any test-day violation (looking away,
noise, unauthorised material on desk) voids the score, NO refund
(k) Score-validity 2 years from test date
(l) Score-scale (10-160) is less granular than TOEFL/IELTS at the top
end — institutions sometimes interpret DET 130-160 as "TOEFL 100+
equivalent" without sub-score distinction
(m) Sub-section reporting (Production / Comprehension / Conversation /
Literacy) only released to institution, not separately threshold-
gated by most schools
DET is the optimal choice when [BUDGET_CONSTRAINT] is tight, timeline is
short, AND all [TARGET_INSTITUTIONS] accept it. NOT optimal for state
licensure or USMLE/NCLEX pathways.
§2 — INSTITUTIONAL ACCEPTANCE VERIFICATION
For Need to verify, EVERY institution on the target list MUST
be verified individually:
Standard verification flow:
(a) Go to [institution].edu/admissions/international
(b) Search "Duolingo English Test" or "DET"
(c) Note minimum score, validity window, sub-score requirements (rare)
(d) Note if the institution requires DET ONLY for "alternative" testing
(some require TOEFL/IELTS as primary, DET as backup during COVID
emergency policies that have now lapsed)
Typical DET thresholds (verify current policy — these drift annually):
- Top-30 STEM grad: 120-135 (NYU 125, NEU 120, UIUC 115, USC 120,
Columbia 125, CMU 125, GeorgiaTech 120)
- Top-30 MBA: 130-140 (HBS / GSB do not accept DET as of last review)
- Top 30-100 universities: 105-120
- Regional / state flagships: 95-110
- Community colleges (transfer pathway): 85-100
If ANY institution in [TARGET_INSTITUTIONS] does NOT accept DET, ALL must
be cross-checked — the highest threshold among accepting institutions
sets the prep target. The non-accepting institution requires a separate
TOEFL / IELTS test.
§3 — DET TEST ANATOMY
Adaptive computer-administered test, 1 hour total, in 4 broad task
families that rotate:
Quick Setup (5 min):
(a) Passport / government photo ID held to camera
(b) Room scan (360° webcam view to prove no one else present)
(c) Microphone + camera check
(d) Rules screen: no looking away, no leaning out of frame, no other
people, no headphones, no extra monitors, no third-party software
Graded tasks (mix of):
- Read-aloud (sentence on screen, record yourself reading) — Production
- Speak (read prompt, record 30-90 sec answer) — Production + Conversation
- Listen + type (audio plays, type what you hear) — Comprehension
- Read + select (passage + comprehension MCQ) — Literacy + Comprehension
- Fill-in-the-blank (vocabulary in context) — Literacy
- Write (read prompt, type 50-100 word response) — Production + Literacy
- Picture description (image + 30-90 sec spoken description) —
Production + Conversation
- "Interview" video (open-ended prompt, 1-3 min recorded video answer)
— Conversation
- Writing sample (long writing 3-5 min) — Production + Literacy
Score (10-160) computed by AI from ALL tasks; no separate task scores
released. 4 sub-domain scores released to institution: Literacy,
Comprehension, Conversation, Production. Indian-cohort frequently scores
highest on Literacy, lowest on Production.
§4 — [STUDY_DAYS_AVAILABLE]-DAY PREP PLAN
Day 1-2: TAKE FREE PRACTICE TEST
- duolingo.com/test/practice — full 1-hour practice
- Note the score band (Practice gives indicative range, not exact score)
- Identify task types where you hesitated or scored low
Day 3-5: TASK-FAMILY DRILLING
- Read-aloud: practice 30 sentences/day from BBC / NPR transcripts
- Listen + type: dictation drills from TED-Ed (use English subtitles
for self-check)
- Picture description: pick 5 random images/day, record 60-sec
description, focus on full sentences and prepositions
Day 6-10: PRODUCTION FOCUS (typical Indian-cohort weak point)
- "Interview" video — 5 practice answers/day, each 90-180 sec on
open-ended prompts ("Describe a memorable holiday", "What is your
favourite book and why?")
- Self-record + listen back: cut filler words, slow pace to 130
words/min
- Long-form writing: 1 essay/day, 150-200 words, on prompts like
"Discuss the pros and cons of remote work"
Day 11-15: FULL PRACTICE TESTS
- 1 full practice/day under exact conditions (no notes, no help)
- Track score trajectory
- If 2-3 practices show consistent target hit, BOOK THE TEST for
[TEST_DATE_TARGET]
Day 16-20: REFINEMENT + REST
- Light drilling on weakest task type
- Day before test: NO drilling — light review, full sleep
If [STUDY_DAYS_AVAILABLE] < 14: compress to 5 day-1-2 drills + 1 mock test
per 2 days + 1 rest day + test. Beware: most Indian-cohort applicants
under-perform with < 10 days prep if [PRIOR_ENGLISH_LEVEL] is below CEFR
B2.
If [STUDY_DAYS_AVAILABLE] > 30: add 1-2 weeks of long-form structured
prep (e.g. Duolingo Test Prep on the app, or Arno Kourula's DET prep
materials), THEN follow the above 20-day plan in the final stretch.
§5 — HOME-TEST ENVIRONMENT Yes
DET is taken from home in India. Setup requirements:
ROOM:
- Quiet, private, well-lit
- Door closed, NO other people in room or visible
- Plain background preferred
- Desk clear except for ID and computer
- Lighting on FACE, not behind (no backlight)
EQUIPMENT:
- Laptop or desktop with webcam (built-in or external)
- Microphone (built-in or external)
- Wired or stable Wi-Fi (5+ Mbps download, 2+ Mbps upload)
- Latest Chrome / Firefox browser, NO extensions running
- NO second monitor connected (disconnect physically)
- Phone OFF and out of reach
ID:
- Valid passport (Indian passport accepted)
- Aadhaar NOT accepted (no English name printing standardisation)
- Indian driving licence accepted at some discretion (passport
strongly preferred)
PRE-TEST CHECKS:
- Run Duolingo's free system check 24 hrs before
- Disable Windows / Mac notifications
- Close ALL other applications (no Zoom, Slack, browser tabs)
- Pee BEFORE starting — once test begins, breaks NOT permitted
- Have water nearby (must show bottle to camera at room scan)
PROCTORING:
- AI proctor watches the recording (NOT live human proctor)
- Looking away from screen for > 2-3 sec flagged
- Talking to anyone / phone ringing audibly flagged
- Hands leaving keyboard frame flagged
- If 3+ flags accumulate, test auto-voided
If Yes is "Need to arrange":
- Coworking space private room (verify internet stability)
- University library private study room (check policy on test-taking)
- Avoid PG / hostel / shared apartment with foot traffic
§6 — SCORE-SEND STRATEGY
DET allows UNLIMITED free score sends. After the test:
(a) Receive score within 48 hrs via email
(b) Log into duolingo.com/test → "Send Results"
(c) Search each institution by name
(d) Send to all [TARGET_INSTITUTIONS] in one go
If score is BELOW [TARGET_DET_SCORE]:
- Retake allowed: 1 paid test per 30-day period (USD 65 each)
- 3-test annual cap (3 graded tests per year)
- Free practice unlimited
If score is ABOVE [TARGET_DET_SCORE]:
- Send to ALL targets at once — institutions don't see number of
retakes (only latest sent score, unless they request all)
- DO NOT send if uncertain — once sent, cannot recall
§7 — MAKING DET WORK FOR US VISA APPLICATIONS
The DET score on its own does NOT satisfy F-1 visa requirements directly —
it satisfies the INSTITUTION's admission requirement. Once the institution
admits [CLIENT_NAME] and issues Form I-20, the DET score is part of the
DSO's file under 8 CFR §214.2(f)(1)(i)(B) — the DSO certifies the
applicant is "sufficiently proficient in English". The DET score is NOT
re-evaluated by the consular officer at the F-1 interview.
However, at the F-1 interview (US consulate in Mumbai / Delhi /
Hyderabad / Chennai / Kolkata), the consular officer WILL assess spoken
English informally during the interview. A high DET score but stumbling
spoken English at the consulate may raise INA §214(b) concerns about
"sufficient English to pursue studies". So real spoken-English fluency
still matters — don't rely on DET as a "shortcut" without committing to
actual language practice.
§8 — INSTITUTIONAL FALLBACK IF DET REJECTED
If on review Need to verify turns up one institution that does
not accept DET:
(a) Drop that institution, OR
(b) Take TOEFL iBT or IELTS Academic for that institution (parallel
test, separate fee) — see us-language-toefl-ibt-preparation prompt
(c) Some institutions accept Cambridge or PTE Academic — check
explicitly
§9 — RED-FLAG CHECKLIST
- All [TARGET_INSTITUTIONS] verified to accept DET in current cycle?
- DET minimum score verified at each institution (not the institution's
TOEFL minimum extrapolated)?
- Home environment verified: passport + quiet room + stable internet +
no other monitors?
- 24-hr system check done before test day?
- Score-validity (2 yrs from test date) covers admission decision +
I-20 issuance + visa interview?
- Backup plan if score is voided due to environment violation? (Retake
in 30 days; have buffer time before institution deadline.)
End with: "DRAFT — for licensed US immigration attorney or accredited representative review. Verify against current USCIS Form Instructions and institutional admission requirements before submission."Unlock the vault to see the full prompt
