§1 - TESTDAF FORMAT REFRESH (g.a.s.t. e.V. specification)
TestDaF is the most-used university-admission test for international applicants to German universities. It is run twice a year in paper form (six worldwide sittings) and rolling in digital form. Modules are independent; you receive a TDN (TestDaF-Niveaustufe) per module on a 3-5 scale.
Four modules:
(a) Leseverstehen (LV - Reading): 60 min, 3 texts (university notice / scientific essay / commentary), 30 questions (matching, T/F/not-given, multiple choice)
(b) Horverstehen (HV - Listening): 40 min, 3 audio passages (dialogue / interview / expert presentation), 25 questions
(c) Schriftlicher Ausdruck (SA - Writing): 60 min, one essay (data description + argumentation, ~300-350 words)
(d) Mundlicher Ausdruck (MA - Speaking): 35 min, 7 tasks (rising difficulty - introduction, describe data, comparison, argumentation, hypothesis, advice)
Scoring per module:
TDN 5 - excellent (~ C1+ CEFR)
TDN 4 - good (~ upper-B2 CEFR) - admission standard for most degree programmes
TDN 3 - sufficient (~ B2 CEFR) - some Fachhochschulen accept; most universities do not
Below TDN 3 - reported as "below TDN 3", does not count
CEFR mapping (HRK 25/06/2004 framework):
TDN 5 = C1 / TDN 4 = B2+ / TDN 3 = B2 baseline
For [PROGRAMME] at the relevant university, the typical bar is TDN 4 in all four modules. Some programmes (Medicine, Law, Germanistik) require TDN 5 in two modules. Verify with [PROGRAMME]'s admission page.
§2 - HONEST GAP ASSESSMENT FOR [CLIENT_NAME]
Gap from [CURRENT_LEVEL] to [TARGET_TDN]:
- If [CURRENT_LEVEL] is B1: need approximately 350-500 hours focused study + 80-120 hours TestDaF-specific format prep
- If [CURRENT_LEVEL] is B2: need approximately 150-250 hours TestDaF-specific format prep
- If [CURRENT_LEVEL] is B2+: 80-150 hours format prep
Plot [PREP_WEEKS] x [DAILY_HOURS]:
Total hours available = ([PREP_WEEKS] x 5 weekdays x weekday-hours) + ([PREP_WEEKS] x 2 weekend-days x weekend-hours)
State explicitly: REALISTIC / TIGHT / NOT ACHIEVABLE - RESCHEDULE.
§3 - MODULE-BY-MODULE PREP STRATEGY
A) LESEVERSTEHEN (LV) - Reading
- Strengthen: academic vocabulary (Wissenschaftssprache), connector words (allerdings, dennoch, gleichwohl, ferner), genre conventions (university notice vs scientific essay vs commentary)
- Practice: 3x past papers per week (timed - 60 min strict); g.a.s.t. official Musterprufung 1-5; deutsch-perfekt magazine Wissenschaft section
- Common trap: "not given" questions - look for assertion, don't infer. Inference = wrong in TestDaF
- Resources: gast.de Modellsatz, Hueber Fit furs TestDaF Leseverstehen, Klett TestDaF 20 Ubungen
- Target: 25/30 in mocks consistently before test day
B) HORVERSTEHEN (HV) - Listening
- Strengthen: note-taking under pressure (one listen for items 1-15, two listens for item 16-25); fast-speech tolerance; academic register
- Practice daily: 1x TestDaF model audio + 1x DW Deutsch Aktuell Audiothek (B2-C1); shadow-speak after every 15-second chunk
- Common trap: parallel-structure items where two consecutive answers look the same - confirm Sprecher (speaker) attribution
- Resources: gast.de Modellsatz audio, Cornelsen TestDaF Horen, DW Top-Thema mit Vokabeln, German university lecture recordings on YouTube
- Target: 20/25 in mocks
C) SCHRIFTLICHER AUSDRUCK (SA) - Writing
- Format: ~300-350 words; introduce topic, describe graphs/data, structure for/against, take a reasoned position
- Template structure (memorise):
Para 1: Einleitung - paraphrase topic + introduce the data source
Para 5: Eigene Meinung + Schluss - position with one supporting reason
- Common trap: copying topic-paragraph verbatim into Einleitung (zero originality marks); only describing data, forgetting argumentation
- Practice: 2x essays per week, hand-marked by Goethe instructor or paid C1+ proofreader (Italki / Preply tutors)
- Resources: gast.de Modellsatz SA, Hueber Fit furs TestDaF Schreiben, model essays in Cornelsen TestDaF Schreiben
- Target: 3 of 7 criteria scored "high" (Gesamtaufbau, Verbindung der Sprache, sprachliche Mittel) + write under 60 min reliably
D) MUNDLICHER AUSDRUCK (MA) - Speaking
- Format: 7 tasks of rising difficulty (recorded, no examiner present in paper version; in digital version delivered via headset to centre staff)
- Pacing: tasks 1-2 ~30 sec each, tasks 3-5 ~1-1.5 min, tasks 6-7 ~2 min
- Common trap: time-panic - speaker freezes mid-task. Drill silence-handling ("Lassen Sie mich kurz uberlegen ... Also, meiner Meinung nach ...")
- Module-specific drills:
Task 3 (data description): "Auf der Grafik ist zu sehen, dass ..."
Task 4 (comparison): "Im Gegensatz dazu ... / Wahrend ..."
- Practice: 4x per week, record yourself, replay critically; weekly 30-min session with a tutor
- Resources: gast.de Modellsatz MA, BibliographicaTestDaF speaking simulator, YouTube channels Easy German, Authentic German Learning
- Target: TDN 4 in all 7 tasks
For [WEAK_MODULES] specifically: double the weekly hours on those, halve on strongest modules.
